Feeding Mechanisms and Speed of Sailfish

The population of sailfish in the north of Quintana Roo is subject to sport and commercial fishing and to tourist use through the extreme sport of swimming while they are “hunting” the big bait balls. Considered one of the most prized trophies in sport fishing and, in some cases, sacrificed for taxidermy.

It is very important to obtain real and updated estimates of the population that occurs in these waters, to know its status and to determine a sustainable use of the species considered as a natural resource.

Simultaneously, we intend to use high-speed video-recordings, size estimates with laser pointers and high-definition photography, to know the speed of attack and the feeding mechanisms of the fastest fish. We want to know how they group their prey and use their skills, their iridescent colors and above all, their sail when they feed.
